No two bags are alike. Made once. Made for you.

MIROKU makes handmade tatami-beri bags at Honmyoji Temple in Fuji City, Shizuoka, Japan. Each piece is one of a kind — woven by hand from Japanese tatami-beri (the decorative fabric edging of tatami mats) and paper band recycled in the same city.

If you are looking for a unique Japanese craft bag, a sustainable textile accessory, or a gift with a clear story of place and material, this is what we offer.

What is a tatami-beri bag?

Tatami-beri is the woven band traditionally sewn around Japanese tatami flooring. It comes in many colours, patterns and textures. When rooms are remade, leftover edging is often discarded. We keep those remnants and give them a second life as bags you can carry every day.

We do not reprint or mass-dye the cloth. Pattern placement and colour combinations vary with the materials on hand, so it is difficult to make two identical bags. Once a one-of-a-kind piece is sold, it may never be reproduced.

What we sell

Our collection focuses on small-run, handmade bags in Japan:

  • Bottle bags and everyday carriers — sized for daily use, finished by hand
  • Tote bags in tatami-beri — soft structure, one meeting of cloth and hand
  • One-of-a-kind pieces — available, reserved, or sold out as each work finds its person

Prices are shown in Australian dollars (AUD). Pieces are made slowly at the temple; we do not operate as fast fashion or mass retail.

Materials and making

Every bag is crafted entirely by hand at Honmyoji Temple, at the foot of Mount Fuji. Materials include:

  • Tatami-beri remnants from local tatami makers
  • Recycled paper band produced in Fuji City
  • Cotton lining on the tote bags

Slight differences in shape, stitching and finish are part of handmade work — not defects.
